Ask your MP not to fall for GM hype PDF Print E-mail

The GM PR machine has been in overdrive of late persuading UK government ministers that the time is right to relax Britain's policy on the use of GM crops because of the global food crisis.

Yet the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland are all opposed to GM, the UK Government's own GM Nation debate concluded that 85% of the public didn't want GM crops grown in this country, and a major recent UN/World Bank report concluded that there is no convincing evidence to support claims of major benefits from GM crops and that they would appear to have little potential to alleviate hunger and poverty.

Friends of the Earth have an excellent campaign warning MPs not to fall for GM hype. It’s very easy to take part and provides you with your MP’s contact details: just click here.

Write to the supermarkets PDF Print E-mail

There is currently a big push by the biotech industry to force GM foods into Europe.

Whether they succeed is largely in the hands of the supermarkets, which have most power over the European food supply. Until now the supermarkets, under pressure from consumers, have banned GM ingredients from their own-brand products but hardly any have so far banned the use of GM animal feed in their meat, dairy or egg production lines.

Please ask the supermarkets to maintain their strong stance against GM ingredients and, in particular, to ensure that their meat, eggs, and dairy products are GM-free. Send your letters to each supermarket listed – addresses below the model letter.

Please personalise your letters. You may also like to add points from Stealth GMOs or 10 reasons why we don’t need GM foods

MODEL LETTER

Dear.....................

I am writing to express my strong concern about the renewed attempts by some politicians and by the biotech industry to force GM foods into Europe. Many leading scientists have expressed concerns over many years about the safety of GM foods and the lack of proper studies, and my family and I definitely don't want to eat them.

I'm therefore writing to ask you for confirmation that you will continue to enforce the strong stand that ........ [insert name of supermarket that you are writing to e.g. Sainsbury's] has taken over nearly a decade to protect us all from the dangers of GM foods by excluding them from your own brand products.

I would also ask you, in particular, to ensure that your suppliers of meat, eggs and dairy products feed their livestock only non-GM animal feed. If you have ranges of meat, eggs and dairy that are fed on non-GM feed, please let me know which these are and label these ranges clearly as "GM Free" so I can continue to shop for my family from your stores with confidence, knowing that we are not eating foods produced from GMOs.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours ....
